Wrong Number

It was bad - as bad as it had ever been. He had done something horrible that he couldn't make right; he needed to talk to someone about it. To confess.

He clutched his cellphone tightly and, his trembling fingers stumbling on the keypad, dialed. He brought the phone to his ear and waited, his mouth desert-dry, for the soft ringing to cease. The sound was nearly drowned out by the sound of his shower running in the background, washing the sin away from the woman he'd... dishonored.

There was a click. Someone had picked up.

He tried to swallow, but choked on the motion and gave a cough instead. "Ah - Asuka?" Said the hoarse whisperer.

There was no response, but he didn't need one. "I'm sorry... I've... I made love to her. Again. And you were still all I could think about. I might've even called your name -"

"Who is this?" The voice on the other end of the phone was male.

The caller froze, the cellphone turning to lead in his hand. "Uh."

"Kitty-in-the-House Florists, this is Kyou speaking. Can I help you?"

Oh crap. He must've gotten the wrong speed-dial key. Yohji whipped the phone away from his ear and hit the "cancel" button. Then he stood up, crossed the room, pulled a bottle of wine out of the fridge. He poured a glass and downed it in one gulp.

The cellphone was still in his hand, as though glued there. Giving it a sidelong glare, Yohji dialed again.

It rang longer than usual.

Finally, it picked up.

"Hello?"

Yohji breathed a sigh of relief. "Asuka..."

"Oh, Yohji, hi!" He felt the tension melting away at the smooth sound of her voice. "What's up?"

As he opened his mouth to speak, he suddenly realized that the background noise of the shower had ceased. He panicked - when had it shut off? "I'm sorry, I have to go," he said quickly, and hung up.

Somewhere in the afterlife, Asuka hung up the phone, breathing her own sigh of relief. She turned to the figure in bed beside her. "So, Kyou... how long do you think until he realizes that you're dead too?"
